The blanket is inspired by my work as a graphic designer and singer-songwriter, as well as Basotho cultural practices rooted in song and initiation traditions. It draws inspiration from Basotho girls’ initiation attire and the idea that “privacy is power; people cannot ruin what they do not know.”
Lesira refers to a grass face mask worn by Basotho female initiates (Bale), symbolizing protection, concealment, and the transition into adulthood. It represents safeguarding one’s future and preserving cultural identity, especially as initiation practices become less common. The design combines Lesira, litema patterns, and textile expression as a statement of cultural preservation (ts’ireletso ea moetlo oa Basotho). It reflects pride in Basotho heritage while reimagining tradition in a modern form. The colour white represents the Lesira mask and initiates’ facial application (phetla). Black and red represents contrast and strength. The design is unisex, as protection and heritage belong to everyone.
