Crafted with purpose, the ReNOKA Blanket is more than just a beautiful design – it’s a powerful symbol of unity, sustainability, and our shared commitment to protecting Lesotho’s vital water resources.
The Designer:
ReNOKA meaning “we are a river” in Sesotho, is a national programme in Lesotho and movement that seeks to restore land and water resources across the country, helping secure water for the estimated 16 million people in the Orange-Senqu basin. Lesotho with 3.3% of land in the Orange-Senqu basin contributes 42% of runoff into the basin but it is challenged by land and water degradation, compromising the security of water for Lesotho and the rest of the region. Acknowledging the rich history and cultural significance of the blanket in the culture of the Basotho nation, ReNOKA is partnering with Aranda to give all a chance to contribute towards the protection of this precious resource from the headwaters in Lesotho. By buying this blanket, you are contributing to community-led projects aligned with the integrated catchment management planning processes that give communities an opportunity to identify the challenges in their environment and find solutions collectively.
Design:
Fascinatingly woven into the history of the Basotho nation, the Basotho blanket is a symbol of cultural pride. Symbolizing the beauty of Lesotho, the mountains, the rivers, the Qiloane mountain that has inspired the hard to miss Basotho hat, the ReNOKA blanket was designed to reflect this. The symbols are an embodiment of what Lesotho has to offer, from the natural environment to the innovative technologies that Lesotho uses to protect the natural environment, the blanket denotes this.
The ReNOKA - Aranda partnership complements the Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Hackathon’s objective by showcasing how innovative, cross-sectoral collaborations can translate NbS into tangible, market-driven initiatives. The sale of ReNOKA-branded blankets, with a portion of proceeds supporting local communities to implement climate-resilient catchment rehabilitation measures and livelihoods, exemplifies a practical application of mechanisms that recognize and compensate communities for their sole in protecting ecosystems aligned with the principles of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES)—a core theme of Hackathon’s co-creation efforts.
We as Aranda are joining the movement and are a part of a story of restoration.
